Officer's clock (capucine) striking at the passing of the hours and a half and repetition of the hour on request, signed (dial) 'Gérard à Liège, circa 1800. White enamel dial, Roman numerals, chiselled bezel, setting dial for the alarm at 12 o'clock, steel hands; movement with two brass barrels, anchor escapement, single balance wheel; brass case. H. 28cm. Auguste Gérard (18113-1891) was born in Namur and trained in Liège at the watchmaker Mathieu Cleinge, whose daughter he married. After a few years in Paris he returned to Liège and settled in 1837. Inventive, he became a notable pioneer of electric watchmaking.
