VERDET, Emile. Lectures in physics given at l'Ecole Polytechnique, 2 volumes 1868; Lectures in physics given at l'Ecole Normale, 2 volumes, 1872; Notes and Memoirs preceded by a note by M. de la Rive, 1872; Théorie mécanique de la chaleur, 2 volumes, 1868; Leçons d'optique physique, 2 volumes 1869. Set of 9 volumes in uniform binding from half green grief and marbled plates (wear). Ex Bibliothèque du Laboratoire Central de l'Administration des Contributions Indirectes. Set of 9 vols. Complete works of Verdet, one of the most remarkable teachers of physics in France in the 19th century. It is thanks to Verdet that the new theories of thermodynamics by Joule Clausius, Helmholtz and Thompson were introduced in France; at the same time, Verdet's original research on the effects of a magnetic field on the plane of polarization of a ray of light gave birth to Verdet's 'Constant', a measure of the power of magnetic rotation.
