Console in wrought and forged iron and cut... - Lot 51 - Chayette & Cheval
Console in wrought and forged iron and cut and embossed sheet metal. Provence, Comtat Venaissin, made by a Master Locksmith around 1720. A true masterpiece by the virtuosity of the visual interweaving of iron bars, curves and counter-curves. They stretch and overlap to highlight two jagged rocaille motifs, one in the centre of the belt, the other in the middle of the narrow spacer, joining four feet in acanthus with a crosier. No mask, no initial on this model, whose volutes and crooks are in perfect symmetry opposite each other. The entablature has a powerful right moulding, made in one piece, receiving a marble that has now disappeared. H: 94 cm; W: 129 cm; D: 58 cm Our model has been stored for many years in a dry attic and the patina of the metal has not led to any cracks. It is missing its marble and on the left corner of the moulding, a small floral motif (acanthus leaf) on the model of its counterpart on the right, which is perfectly preserved. The base, made of fir wood, is of the period and retains the original "sang-de-boeuf" patina under a green paint. It allowed the console to be raised, thus avoiding knocks and the dampness caused by washing the floors. It is likely that the two central motifs were gilded. The few rare models sold on the French market have in common dimensions that are very close to each other to within ten centimetres.
