BRYANT (William Cullen), Picturesque America; or, the land we live in. A delineation by pen and pencil, New York (Appleton and Company), [1872-1874]. 2 volumes folio, contemporary aubergine leather with cold decoration on boards, gilt titles on both upper boards (corners dulled with loss of leather, headbands rubbed, lower spine of second volume detached for 7/8 centimeters). Volume I. frontispiece, engraved title, VIII + 568 with 22 plates; volume II. Frontispiece, engraved title, VI + 576 pages with 23 plates. Marginal banding to several leaves but internally good. Beautiful publication richly illustrated with scenes of North America. W.C. Bryant was the editor of the New York Evening Post but also a poet. The text was first published in Appleton's Journal. The plates are engraved on steel. Attached is The Universal Atlas containing 117 pages of maps, and an Alphabetical Index of 125000 names London (Cassel Company), 1893 In-fol. Contemporary half calf (first cover detached), [4] pp, 117 maps, 106 pp. of index. 3 maps with tears, some foxing, otherwise good condition and complete, and three Dutch school atlases.
