Yard watch in the Renaissance style marked... - Lot 179 - Chayette & Cheval
Yard watch in the Renaissance style marked with the name 'Jean Falise Dijon', first third of the 19th century, using some older elements. Annular hour scale applied to a silver plate chased with deer and bird hunting scenes, leaves and foliage on a black background, Roman numerals, hand missing; elongated oval brass movement, openworked and engraved cock, verge escapement (no balance wheel), fusee with gut string; openworked and engraved silver case. 100mm x 25mm x 42mm. With a dark leather protective case decorated with a silver frieze and lined with blue velvet. Interesting and skilful assembly from the first decades of the 19th century incorporating some elements, such as the hour ring, the pillars and the mobiles of a late 17th or 18th century movement. For a similar gilt brass watch with a rock crystal case, see Chayette Cheval, Horlogerie, Marine, and Related Sciences, December 18, 2015, lot 113. A nearly identical example with the same signature was shown by Heritage Auctions on December 9, 2008. Links to the famous Parisian goldsmith-jeweler Lucien Falize are not established.
