Remarkable Senufo pulley stirrup, featuring... - Lot 71 - Chayette & Cheval
Remarkable Senufo pulley stirrup, featuring a hornbill with humanized features. The projected crop is framed by outstretched wings decorated on the reverse with ornamental motifs. The long beak extends the curvature of the skull, and joins the belly, as a sign of fertilization, drawing in profile with the head and the body, a full and round volume. The inside of the legs, forming a functional leg that used to hold the pulley, is marked by the scrolling of the latter. A symbol of lineage, the hornbill is a central figure in vernacular mythology, here magnified through an everyday object, by the hand of a great sculptor. The patina of use, clear at the points of contact, glossy elsewhere, the skilful play of curves and counter-curves, the balance finally, make this work a very beautiful testimony of the type.
