DAN (Pierre). The treasure of the wonders... - Lot 19 - Chayette & Cheval
DAN (Pierre). The treasure of the wonders of the royal house of Fontainebleau. In Paris, by S. Cramoisy, 1642. In-folio, [22] f. (title, dedications, tables), 354 p., [1] f. (privileges), figs, contemporary brown calf, spine with 6 nerves, tan calf title-piece, ornamented caissons, gilt roulette at the edges, red edges, headpieces, spines and corners restored (stains on the upper cover, one white endpaper missing; minor flaws and angular dampst in margins of last 12 f., corners of last 3 f. replaced; engravings trimmed a little short on right side with minor flaws). Rare first edition of the first monograph devoted to the castle of Fontainebleau. It is illustrated with 9 full-page copper-engraved figures by Abraham Bosse and Michel Lasne, after the drawings of Tommaso Francini (1572-1651), engineer and fountain-maker to the king. Eight engravings show spectacular fountains of his composition; and one, appearing at the head of the volume, offers a general perspective view of the castle and its gardens. Some old underlining at the beginning of the volume; old annotations in the margin on p.134. Provenance: given by the author on May 6, 1642 (handwritten ex-donation to the title); L.-J.-Charles d'Albert d'Ailly, duc de Chaulnes, prince de Neuchâtel, 18th c. (engraved armorial bookplate); J. Degout, priest and chaplain of the Hôtel-Dieu de Melun, ca. 1881 (handwritten bookplate); (Berlin Kat., 2460).
