JONES (Inigo); KENT (William). The Designs of Inigo Jones, consisting of plans and elevations for public and private buildings. S.l., s.n., 1727. 2 volumes in one vol. in-folio, antique havana half calf with corners, spine with 6 nerves, garnet-red title-piece, mounted on tabs, untrimmed, endpapers renewed (binding rubbed, spines split, fragile attachment of the upper board, foxing on the title, then sporadic and very moderate; without the frontispiece). Posthumous first edition of this splendid collection illustrating the work of the English architect and decorator Inigo Jones (1573-1652); compiled and published by William Kent (c.1685-1748), painter, engraver and architect. A neatly bound copy, with the margins preserved. The work consists of, for volume 1, [7] leaves (title illustrated with an engraved vignette with the portrait of Inigo Jones, dedication, warning, table of plates, list of subscribers), illustrated with 3 copper-engraved bands, 3 culs-de-lampe and 2 initials and 73 plates; for volume 2, [4] f. (title similar to the first one, with the same vignette, table of plates illustrated with a headband, a cul-de-lampe and an initial), and 63 plates. The numbering of the plates conceived by the editor counts each single plate and each flap of a double or folding plate, the work really contains 97 single, double or folding plates. The engraving is due to P. Fourdrinier, H. Hulsbergh, J. Cole and A. Herisset. (Fowler 162; Millard British 34).
