[Gardens]. LORIS (Daniel). The thresor of... - Lot 44 - Chayette & Cheval
[Gardens]. LORIS (Daniel). The thresor of the parterres of the universe containing the figures and portraits of the most beautiful compartments, huts and labyrinths of the gardens, both in the German and French styles. With the way to build them, compile and form them dexterously... Geneva, Etienne Gamonet, 1629. Small in-4 (223 x 160 mm), [14] f., 200 p., fig., modern vellum, smooth and muted spine, trace of laces (inside washed; f. L1 and L4; f. bb4 restored with small lack; trace of stamp on last f.) Rare first edition of this splendid collection composed by D. Loris, physician and herbalist as was customary at the time, in the service of the dukes of Wurtemberg, counts of Montbéliard. This is one of the first books of garden models. The text is in Latin, French, German and English. The illustration is entirely woodcut and consists of a figure on each page showing garden beds and layouts, including labyrinths. The historian L. Paya has devoted to this often quoted but hitherto rarely studied work a very well documented note, placing the work in the very particular context of the principality of Montbéliard at the beginning of the 17th century. We refer to this work, which describes the Thrésor des parterres de Loris as a "remarkable testimony" to a very particular episode in the history of gardens in Europe, namely a "late Renaissance" specific to this region. (L. Paya, 2006, notice on http://architectura.cesr.univ-tours.fr/) Trace of an old manuscript bookplate of a Jesuit institution (of Nîmes?) on the title. (USTC 6701803; Berlin Kat. 3440).
