[Manuscript]. [MARINIER (G.)]. Memoires des... - Lot 46 - Chayette & Cheval
[Manuscript]. [MARINIER (G.)]. Memoires des dépenses que le Roi a faites dans ses batimens depuis l'année 1664 jusquques en l'année 1690 inclusively. 18th century. In-folio, 72 numbered pages including the title, period green vellum, smooth and muted spine, red edges, spine restored (corners rubbed). Carefully handwritten copy, in ink on paper, of this important memoir drawn up by G. Marinier, clerk to the superintendence of the king's buildings, and dedicated to its director, the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Composed of 18 chapters, this well-documented report lists the expenses that Louis XIV allocated to the construction and maintenance of his palaces and other buildings. Each of the first fifteen chapters is devoted to one or more buildings: the castles of Versailles, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Marly, Fontainebleau, and Chambord in particular; the Arc de Triomphe and Observatory of Paris, the Invalides; and factories, including the Gobelins and the Savonnerie. Two chapters deal with the pensions of literary figures and the financing of the academies in Paris and Rome; and finally, the last chapter offers a general statement of expenditures over the 37 years studied. A scholarly note is included. Provenance: Dr. Lucien-Graux (sale in Paris, 1959, lot 313; gilt bookplate on green leather).
