Volume one [-three]. In Paris, by Jean Mariette, 1727-1728. Three volumes in-folio, one strong, contemporary speckled tan calf, spine with 6 nerves, title and giblets, red edges, identical binding for volumes 1 and 2, lighter cover for volume 3 of slightly larger size (restorations, accidents and wear including torn off headpieces, upper cover of volume 3 detached; moderate freckling generally at the margins, qq. rare browned plates First edition and first printing of this important collection of engraved architectural plates, conceived and published by the engraver and print dealer Jean Mariette (1660-1742). It offers one of the most beautiful panoramas of French architecture of the Grand Siècle, highlighting the works of the most prestigious builders of the time, notably Jean Marot, François Mansart and Jules Hardouin-Mansart, Germain Boffrand, Jean-François Blondel. The plates were reprinted and published between 1752 and 1756 by the publisher Jombert, under the direction of the architect Blondel, who added a large number of new figures, forming a new work composed of four folio volumes and known as the "Grand Blondel". Volume 1 contains a title page and 252 plates, volume 2, 1 title and 244 plates, that is to say 496 plates. Volume 3 consists of an engraved title and 73 plates, among which only 47 bear the address of Mariette. Our set thus gathers 543 plates. The number of plates varies slightly from one copy to another, it is about 550 plates for a complete copy. In addition to these 47 plates, the 3rd volume contains 12 plates without Mariette's address (including 2 by Marot, a view of the castle of Marly and a plan of Chantilly); and a suite composed of a title and 13 plates: LE BRUN (Charles), Divers desseins de décorations... Paris, Edelinck, s.d. [circa 1680 ?]. Rare suite engraved by Louis de Chatillon offering elevations of the pavilions of Marly (Guilmard, 76, n°4). The first two title pages are identical and have the same typewritten labels. The third is of a different workmanship, without mention of the title and dated 1728. Provenance: contemporary manuscript bookplate of an architect on t.3; G.-A. Galard de Béarn, comte de Brassac, 1694-1768 (engraved armorial bookplate); Edmond Foulc (1828-1916, prov. assumed from a modern ms. note on t.1). (Berlin Kat., 2497; Millard, I, 113-114).
