MAROT (Jean). The magnificent castle of Richelieu,... - Lot 48 - Chayette & Cheval
MAROT (Jean). The magnificent castle of Richelieu, in general and in particular, or the plans, the fasades, the elevations, and profiles of the aforementioned castle. And of its bailey, courtyards, corps de logis, stables, riding schools, generally of all its appartemens.... S.l., s.n., [between 1656 and 1661]. In-8 oblong (ca. 12 x 25 cm), [3] f., [17] copper-engraved plates, modern ivory vellum, smooth and muted spine. Rare edition of this collection of engravings showing the castle of Richelieu, conceived and realized by Jean Marot as a pocket-sized souvenir album, which provides the most faithful testimony of what this building was, designed by the architect Jacques Le Mercier at the request of the cardinal of Richelieu, and now disappeared. Marot first published an in-4° edition and, in view of the large number of visitors "who flocked to the site from all over Europe", he decided to produce this more convenient edition. It is much rarer than the in-4° version, from which it differs, the plates having been re-engraved, with variations; the title is also slightly different. (According to G. Vouhé, " Note sur l'édition en petit format du Magnifique chasteau de Richelieu de Jean Marot ", annexe à l'article " Jacques Le Mercier, créateur du salon à l'italienne au château de Richelieu ", in Bull. monumental, 165-4, 2007, p.366 sq.). It seems that the commercial success was rather limited, and the print run restricted, if one believes the small number of copies that have been preserved (5 copies reported in the Worldcat: RIBA, Cambridge Univ. Libr., Bay. Staatsbibl., Danish National Library, and Canadian Centre for Architecture). The number of plates seems to vary, this copy contains 17 plates, one of which is folding, but we do not know if it can be considered complete. The plates are preceded by 3 typographed leaves including the title, a dedication from Augustin de Buisine to Richelieu, a Notice to the reader. Moreover, this copy contains 7 additional plates in duplicate, flying.
