NEUFFORGE (Jean-François de). Recueil élémentaire... - Lot 50 - Chayette & Cheval
NEUFFORGE (Jean-François de). Recueil élémentaire d'architecture... A Paris, chez l'auteur, [1757]-1768. 8 volumes in 4 folio volumes. - Supplement... [1772-1776]. 1 volume in folio. That is to say 5 volumes. First edition of this important collection of engraved plates, one of the peaks of the architectural book in France in the mid-eighteenth century. Jean-François de Neufforge, a native of the Liège region, came to Paris in 1738 where he studied engraving and architecture under Jacques-François Blondel. His Recueil highlights "the beginnings of a return to classicism and the development of the characteristic forms of the Greek style, mixing ancient and High Renaissance references. The work was well received by the Academy. In his two additional volumes (1772 and 1780) the evolution of his style shows the influence of Peyre and Palladio" (Notice INHA). The rare copies complete with all the plates including the two supplements (the second one, published in 1780, is absent here) must contain 914 plates. This one contains a total of 765 plates. 1.
