[Book of the XVIth century]. SERLIO (Sebastiano). Quinto libro d'architettura di Sabastiano Serlio... nel quale se tratta de diverse forme de tempii sacri secondo il costume christiano... In Paris, of the Impr. of M. de Vascosan, 1547. In-folio, [1] f. (title), 31 (out of 34) f., figs, [sign. A-E 6, F1 (out of 4)], old parchment, spine with 4 nerves and mute, traces of laces (cover of the lower cover detached with gaps at the corners, marginal worm work at the foot of the pages, not serious, stains in the margins of fol.18-19 and of f.30v° and 31 r°, the latter flying with small mq. in margin; f. 32, 33 and the last, blank, are missing). First edition of the fifth book of Serlio's architecture, dedicated to ancient temples and Christian churches. It contains the Italian text and the translation by Jean Martin. The illustration, entirely woodcut, consists of a frame for the title, and mid- or full-page figures offering plans, sections and elevations of the buildings. Poor and old drawings of plans on the upper flyleaf and in the margin of f.31. Early signature on upper flyleaf: Thibergeau. (USTC 130015; Fowler, 321; Berlin Kat., 2565). Attached: SERLIO (Sebastiano). De architectura libri quinque... a Ioanne Carolo Saraceno ex italica in latinam linguam nunc primum translati... Venetiis, apud F. de Franciscis Senensem et J. Chriegher, 1569. In-folio, old soft parchment, smooth and mute spine (binding unbound, cover gaps at the back of the spine and on one corner, copy incomplete, stains, wetnesses, some affecting the paper at the head at the end of the volume). Edition translated from Italian into Latin, illustrated with a large number of woodcut figures in the text. Copy containing 7 of 12 introductory leaves, then paginated from 1 to 354 (of 449), with about 35 leaves missing, then missing the end of book 4, book 5 and the "extraordinary" book on doors.
