[16th century book]. VITRUVE. I dieci libri dell'architettura di M. Vitruvio tradutti et commentati da monsignor Barbaro eletto patriarca d'Aquileggia. Con due tavole, l'una di tutto quello si contiene per i capi nell'opera, l'altra per dechiaratione di tutte le cose d'importanza. Venice, Francesco Marcolini, 1556. In-folio, 274 p., [9] f., figs, antique vellum, 5-ribbed spine, gilt title-piece (lac. of cover at the head of the spine and on 2 nerves, worn corners, partial cracks of the jaws, pitting of worms at the tail of the spine ; title faded and partly unbound, light wetness at the very beginning of the vol, then moderate in q.margins, browning and soiling not serious, tear without missing pl.71, last f. reinforced in margin). First edition of the translation by Daniele Barbaro (1514-1570) which was for a long time an authority. The illustration consists of an architectural and allegorical frontispiece, followed by a large figure showing architects and their instruments, and 131 figures in the text, 8 of which are double-page and 15 full-page, all woodcut by Giuseppe Porte Salviati (1520-1575). Most of these illustrations are by Palladio. 6 engravings bear headlines and 3 volvelles (volvelle of Q2 detached). Numerous pagination and signature errors; 2 romanized leaves at the end of book 4, with doubled signatures, are not found in the digitized copy of the Max Planck Institut. Sign.
