[Sixteenth-century book]. [Gardens]. VREDEMAN DE VRIES (Hans). Hortorum viridariorumque elegantes et multiplicis formae, ad architectonicae artis normam affabre delineatae a Johanne Vredmanno Frisio. Antverpiae, Phillipus Gallaeus excudebat, 1583. In-4 oblong, full recent brown basane, spine with 5 nerves with transfer of fragments of old gilding (title and pl.1 flyleaf shorter in margin and faded, small mq. at edges of title; qq. stains and soiling without gravity). Rare and superb fully engraved collection of characteristic Renaissance garden views, most of which include figures of labyrinths. It consists of a title leaf and 20 plates. Attached is a loose plate pasted on modern paper, belonging to a similar suite, bearing the name of Vredeman de Vries and the excudit of P. Galle. (Berlin Kat. 3390; Hollstein XLVIII, 470-490).
