[Engraving]. [Topography]. [Loreto]. Profile... - Lot 84 - Chayette & Cheval
[Engraving]. [Topography]. [Loreto]. Profile and Elevation of the City of Loreto with the Transportation of the Chamber of the Holy Virgin. [Paris], Lou[is] Boissevin excu[dit] with pri[vilège], [ca. 1650]. One engraved copperplate view, ca. 27.5 x 72 cm. (copperplate); margins and tab included 37.5 x 90 cm. (creases not severe; rubbing affecting qq. letters and a small part of the image; slight foxing in margins). Very rare engraved panoramic view of Loreto (Loreto in French), an Italian town on the Adriatic coast famous for its pilgrimage. It is part of the extremely rare atlas published in Paris by Jean Boisseau between 1642 and 1648, the "Theatre des citez"; it is not cited by Pastoureau because it did not appear in the atlas it describes (Pastoureau, Les atlas français, Boisseau I). This copy bears the address of the merchant Louis Boissevin, visibly regraved on the original copperplate. When Boisseau ceased his activity, around 1648, Louis Boissevin recovered part of his collection which he continued to exploit. Caption in margin below the engraving; cardboard lower right showing the altar dedicated to the Virgin. Old handwritten title on back; tab in left margin and trace of central tab on back.
