[Engraving]. [Topography]. [Venice]. Description... - Lot 87 - Chayette & Cheval
[Engraving]. [Topography]. [Venice]. Description of the Opulent and Manifest City of Venice. A Paris, chez L. Boissevin, [ca. 1650]. One engraved copperplate view, ca. 27.5 x 69.5 cm. (copperplate); margins and tab included 38 x 93.5 cm. (browning and slight wetness along one fold). Very rare engraved panoramic view of Venice. It is part of the extremely rare atlas published in Paris by Jean Boisseau between 1642 and 1648, the "Theatre des citez". This copy bears the address of the merchant Louis Boissevin, visibly regraved on the original copperplate. When Boisseau ceased his activity, around 1648, Louis Boissevin recovered part of his business which he continued to exploit. Numerous places and buildings in the city as well as on the islands of the lagoon bear their engraved designation. Antique manuscript title on spine; tab in left margin and trace of central tab on spine. (Pastoureau, Les atlas français, Boisseau I, n° 35, at Boisseau's address).
