ROYALIST MEDALLION.
Secret medallion (43 mm) consisting of 2 metal
metal discs joined by a bronze
bronze ring. Silver-plated obverse with nude bust of
Louis XVI at left. Caption "L'INFORTUNE LOUIS
XVI / I die innocent and forgive you".
Gilded reverse with inscriptions "Digne fils / de
Saint Louis / ascends to / heaven". The captions
the king's last words and the exhortation
exhortation of his confessor. The medallion
can be opened by pressing, and could - for refractory
priests - a host.
A very rare seditious object, however
in 2 versions: bust of the king dressed and, as here
nude bust.
