Large sculpted and polychromed alabaster bas-relief depictin - Lot 123
Large sculpted and polychromed alabaster bas-relief depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In a mandorla, Mary, her hands open, is wearing a tunic and an open cloak. Her belt is unhooked, and St. Thomas kneels holding one end. Angels surround the scene, and God the Father welcomes the Virgin's ascent. England, Nottingham, second half of the 15th century H. 41.5 cm - L. 25.3 cm (some spalling) The presence of Saint Thomas kneeling at Mary's feet may seem surprising. It evokes a passage from Jacques de Voragine's Golden Legend, in which the Assumption of the Virgin is described, showing the non-corruptibility of Mary's body. Saint Thomas, the figure of the doubting apostle, receives proof of this event from heaven, with Mary unbuckling her girdle and letting it fall so that the saint could receive it. The cathedral of Prato in Tuscany preserves this precious relic, which is displayed every year for the devotion of the faithful. The theme of St. Thomas's double incredulity is an image that has circulated widely in the Christian world, and here it has been taken up by English picture-makers. Expert : Benoît BERTRAND
