PROCLUS, ARATUS, HYGINUS, et ALII. Astronomica... - Lot 1 - Chayette & Cheval
PROCLUS, ARATUS, HYGINUS, et ALII. Astronomica veterum scripta Isagogica græca latin, [Heidelberg], (Officina Sanctandreana), 1589. 2 parts in 1 volume in-8, 17th century vellum, smooth spine with ink title. [2] + 170 pp, then 302 and [2] pages, 48 woodcuts, the text of which illustrates the Poeticon astronomicon of Hyginus. Many quires foxed, moisture stains on the vast majority of the volume in the lower part of the leaves. Rare edition of ancient astronomical works. The first part is printed in Greek and Latin, the second only in Latin. This edition is important because it includes the treatise on the construction of an Aratean globe by the Byzantine (7th century) Leontius Mechanicus (pp.134-157), the only practical treatise on the making of globes to have survived from late antiquity. It should also be noted that the commentary on Hyginus included in this volume is by Thomas Linacre (c. 1460-1544), a humanist and physicist.
