[Book of the 16th century]. ANDROUET DU CERCEAU (Jacques). The first [and second] volume of the most excellent buildings of France. In which are described the plans of fifteen buildings, their contents, together with the singular elevations of each... In Paris, for the said Iacques Androuet, du Cerceau, 1576-1579. Two volumes in one folio, antique vellum, spine with 6 bands, gilt title, manuscript tom., marbled edges (spine distorted with gaps and wormholes, unbound; one quire browned, plates added, 6 plates missing). First edition of Du Cerceau's major work in which some thirty royal and seigniorial palaces and castles are represented. "This first edition is highly sought after, but it is difficult to find well preserved copies" (Brunet). Composition : Volume 1. [8] f., 64 (of 67) plates. Volume containing only 54 plates. - Livre d'architecture... auquel sont contenues diverses ordonnances de plants et élévations de bastiments... Paris, s.n., [1582]. Half-chagrin 19th c. Copy containing only the text leaves 5 to 14 then 16 to 26, and 50 plates out of 52, some of them of a pale edition. That is 4 volumes.
