[Manuscript]. COCTEAU (Jean). - Lot 53
[Manuscript]. COCTEAU (Jean).
Important set of original autograph manuscripts written for the book "Les Reines de la France" co-written with the hairdresser Guillaume, illustrated by Christian Bérard, and published by Darantière in Paris in 1949.
The book is not solely devoted to highlighting famous queens of France; rather, it aims to pay tribute to twenty selected women, who seem to be the author's favorites, including, in a nod to them, "queens" of twentieth-century Paris. It comprises twenty entries by Guillaume and twenty by Cocteau.
These manuscripts, written in ink on fine paper, feature corrections and repentirs and offer a precious reflection of the poet's work. They offer a total of 59 written pages, bringing together 18 notices: 14 have been published, and 4 do not appear in the book, and are perhaps unpublished; they concern Catherine de Médicis, Edwige Feuillère, Polaire and Gaby Delys.
These manuscripts are accompanied by
- A fine copy of the book, with its original Mirabelle binding in decorated blue morocco.
- A mock-up of the book, which according to a handwritten note is the Darantière publisher's copy.
- Another mock-up is for co-author Guillaume.
Provenance: Guillaume Guglielmi, who was undoubtedly one of the most creative and fashionable hairdressers in Paris in the 1930s. Known only by his first name "Guillaume", he was close to Christian Dior, Jean Cocteau, painter and decorator Christian Bérard and his companion, librettist Boris Kochno. He practiced with brio until 1972.
